When people refer to the Shaw neighborhood, the image that most people think of is Shaw's Garden or more properly named, the Missouri Botanical Garden. This Garden is truly one of the finest gardens that you will find in any country and has a national reputation. Every day, thousands of local citizens as well as tourists from everywhere visit this Garden. It is definitely not a tourist attraction that once you have seen, you have seen it. The Missouri Botanical Gardens are just part of the ambiance that lures people to establish their homes in this neighborhood. The picture above shows once of the entrances to Tower Grove Park, which is Victorian gem, that has known generations of St. Louis citizens. The Shaw neighborhood also is just a stone's throw to the cultural climate of the many shops and restaurants that line South Grand. Another key draw (especially for families) is St. Margaret's of Scotland, which has provided an excellent education for its young people as well as being a stimulus for renovation in Shaw. In addition, Shaw has a very strong neighborhood association, which monitors rehabbing to make certain that the work in progress follows their code. The neighborhood has undergone major renovation in the last ten years. While it has always been known for the many beautiful homes on Flora, the other streets in the neighborhood have comprised a mixture of single homes to apartment buildings - all in various stage of repair. All that has been changing with major progress in rehabbing many of the fine homes at prices that are more "friendly" than those are found in Central West End or Lafayette Square. The result has been that professionals, young families, and singles have found the Shaw neighborhood to be their destination.
